Dwyer, who played youth hockey in Great Falls and later competed for the Americans’ Junior A club, wascalled up Saturday from the Albany (N.Y.) River Rats of the American Hockey League. Dwyer, 24, made his NHL appearance since turning professional at the end of the 2004-05 season. In 54 games with the River Rats this season, he scored 11 goals, had eight assists and compiled a plus-six on-ice rating. The 5-11, 175-pound Dwyer turned professional following a four-year collegiate career at Western Michigan University, and scored 43 goals and 62 assists in 206 AHL regular-season games with Chicago and Albany. The Atlanta Thrashers drafted Dwyer in the fourth round, 116th overall, in the 2002 NHL entry fraft. While in Great Falls, Dwyer led the Americans to a Bourne Cup championship in the winter of 2000-01, when he scored 90 points for coach Rikard Gronborg. The Americans had the two leading scorers in the America West Hockey League. Center Rick Kisskeys led the league with 101 points that year.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide information regarding the many options available to a hockey player that wants to compete at the highest level. I have been involved in hockey as a player, coach or administrator for over 50 years. For the last 30 years I have been directly involved with players between the ages of 12 and 20 years old. When it comes to choosing options for their hockey future, I am continually troubled by how poorly prepared and uninformed many players and their parents are. Answers can be found if you know where to look. The challenge is to be realistic when evaluating your hockey abilities and pro-active in the planning of your hockey future. As your skills develop to the higher levels, you should begin to think about your options. I believe parents and players should begin to seriously investigate hockey opportunities when the player is 12 to 14 years old. This is not the forum to debate when a player’s skill potential can accurately be evaluated or predicted. Although there may be optimism concerning potential when players are 12 and under, their potential cannot be realistically evaluated until after they reach the age of maturity. All have dreams and expectations; however players and their parents need to make informed and realistic decisions. We all realize that players mature and develop at different rates. Your coach should be your initial source of information.

The Northern Plains Coaches/ACE Section will be having its’ yearly section meeting
in Spearfish, S.D. on August 16th, 2008. We will not be meeting in July in Billings thus we will
not require a meeting room or a time slot for our group. Hope all is well and congrats to all
who were involved with the Player Development the past few weeks. Al Bloomer was
very complimentary to his experience in Minot and was very gracious to the invite. We spent
lots of time together in Lake Placid this past weekend at the Instructors Training Seminar.
Mike Wald represented us at the Annual ACE Meetings while myself, Dave Dukart [CIC-Montana]
and Hunter Boldt [CEP-Wyoming] were in attendance. We all had great meetings and
had some fun together as well. We have a lot to share in the next few meeting times but our
main focus this summer and fall is rolling out all the ACE that Tom Kehr [Natl ACE] has been
working on with his group including Mike Wald. He and I are in the process of getting the NPD
Board a road map of our plans for the four states. More to come.
Thanks,
Bob Gillen
